On 5th April, a group of school pupils gathered in Cambridge to attend The Triple Helix Science in Society Conference. The event was also attended by a group of 5 pupils and 2 teachers from The Harker School, who host the first Triple Helix High School Chapter. The day began with a panel of expert speakers debating the question “To what extent should we allow manipulations to the human body?”. This was followed by a poster session and debating workshop, allowing the pupils to share and discuss their views on a range of science in society issues. I have had some fantastic feedback about the day from both teachers and pupils, and I myself was very impressed by the quality of the pupils’ posters and their debating skills.

Dear TTH Community,

We are looking forward to seeing you at our 5th annual conference at Washington DC on March 30th, 2012. One of the finest aspects of this event is the opportunity to make your case about a science policy topic you are passionate about, to a community of peers and professional scientists, policy makers, and journalists. You will be presenting your poster at the TTH and STS Global Conference on Saturday, March 31st. The STS Global conference is an undertaking of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), a nonprofit organization promoting cooperation between scientists and publisher of the journal Science.

Anyone in the TTH community who has done extensive research in a topic relating to science policy is encouraged to submit a poster. In particular, writers for the Science in Society Review or The Triple Helix Online will find this session an especially rewarding opportunity to have a dialogue about their articles. Those of us in the EMT who have presented posters in past years agree that this event is a great opportunity to get feedback and bounce off ideas.

To aid in your preparation, International has set up some milestones (see below). Presenters, please be sure to submit an abstract summarizing what you will include under each section of the poster by February 3rd(though you are encouraged to submit earlier). We are primarily checking to make sure that your poster relates to science policy, rather than basic research or topics otherwise unrelated to the theme of our organizations. Furthermore, we would like to make sure you have a clear idea of what you will include in the poster.

Best,

Dhruba Banerjee
Executive Editor-in-Chief, The Triple Helix, Inc.

—————-

Timeline:

January: Create a detailed abstract. (recommended) Submit Abstracts to chapter Editors-in-Chief for feedback.

February 3rd, 12:00 PM EST: Deadline to email detailed abstracts. Submit in .doc/.docx format to the Executive Editor in Chief (eeic@thetriplehelix.org), entitle email with ‘[Your Name]_[Chapter Name]_[Poster Title]‘

February 15th: Final abstract approvals and poster feedback from International will be returned by this date.

February 15th-March 3rd: Design posters. Get feedback from chapter members. Print.

March: (recommended) Organize chapter meeting to practice presenting posters.

The highly successful Schools’ Outreach Programme of the Cambridge chapter has gone global, with an international conference and e-mentoring scheme created by Francesca Day, COO Europe. Both projects will involve pupils from The Harker School in addition to UK pupils. The conference will be held on 5th April, and will include a panel of invited speakers and opportunities for pupils to express their opinions about science in society through a poster session and formal debate. The e-mentoring scheme will offer pupils constructive feedback on their science writing, and the best articles will be published online. Check out the website for these new international outreach projects: www.conference2012.weebly.com.
